An Artist and a Rock Star

I took Garrett to get his latest vaccinations yesterday, and Ava made a big stink about not watching the nurse give him his shots.  Totally understand, I don't like watching that either.  I turned my head away, and instructed Ava to do the same...except what do I find?  Ava right next to me, her gaze locked on the shots.  And that's exactly what she did with her own shots, too. I find that very interesting, so last night at dinner, we had a little discussion about future careers. Me: "Ava, I noticed you were watching Garrett get his shots.  Would you be interested in being a doctor?" Ava: "No." Me: "A nurse?" Ava. "No." Pretty exciting so far, right?  You'd never know that she was such a chatty girl with these verbose responses.  Or, perhaps we had just been after her to finish eating, and I was disrupting that process.  Who knows. Me: "Well, Ava, what were you interested in doing?" Ava: "Weeeeelllllll, I was ...

Oh Peas!

We've been slow (lazy?) about moving G's diet along.  With Ava, we were so good, so structured!  There was a schedule, a plan, a METHOD to how new foods were introduced to her.  Green veggies first, then the orange veggies, and then fruit can be introduced - there IS a reason for this, I promise!  The green veggies aren't as sweet, and they need to be accepted first. If you start with the sweet stuff first, they might never fully accept the green veggies.  With G...not so much.  "Oh, hey, do you think that maybe he should start eating veggies?"  "Yeah."  "Cool."  And then...it's taken 3 weeks (maybe more?) for the green beans to get the all clear.  He likes them, he's not allergic, it's good.  We can move on!  We then tried sweet potato puffs to work on his coordination.  He's not coordinated, and let's just leave it at that.  But, he doesn't mind chomping on them once they are in (and stay in) his mouth. And then...

The Bob Song

"Momma, I want to listen to the Bob Song."  These are words I have heard frequently over the last few years.  And it made me start thinking about how the things that we learn (incorrectly) in our childhood will "haunt" us for years into the future.  For example, the Bob Song.  Let me explain... There's a house in California that does an amazing Halloween light show, set to popular music, each year.  In 2011, the song of the season was Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO (watch it here .)  Ava and I were watching the light show on my iPad one night, and she started asking questions about the four jack o'lantern faces that were the primary focus in the light show.  We named each one (Nancy, Bob, ummm, something, and something else...I don't really remember.  Jack, maybe?) and had a little backstory about them.  I think Nancy was a nurse or something like that.  In any case, Ava LOVED watching the video, and from that point forward, this song has ...

On the Bright Side...

There are some weeks where it's best not to relive some events that happened...and this is one of them!  What a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad week that I had at work.  It ended with me working from 1:30-3:30am on Friday morning...and it didn't get any better during the day on Friday.  It's a darn good thing that happened on Friday and I've had a few days to recover! But, we've had a pretty good weekend so far!  I had a chance to do a few fun projects that I've had brewing for a while...it was so nice to take time to do something that makes me happy.  I forgot how much I enjoy being creative and crafty.  On Saturday, there was a trip to the park, a friend's 30th birthday party, and then a visit with the neighbors while the guys were watching the UFC fight.  I was exhausted by the time I got home and promptly fell asleep by 10pm.  Such a night owl! :) Today, Scott and G are going to visit Great-Grandma while Ava and I head to the Mall o...

Fantastic Family Fun

What a beautiful Easter day!  In the morning we had fun coloring eggs, running an egg hunt throughout the house, and then discovering what the Easter Bunny left for Ava and G.  Later that day, we celebrated a low-key, relaxed dinner with Scott's mom's side of the family.  The weather was perfect (we spent all afternoon outside on the deck), the food was very good, and the company was easy-going.  It was the perfect way to wrap up a holiday weekend, and lead into...my birthday week! :)     Scott's cousin, Ashley, playing with G Ava ran everyone ragged...so much energy! A great pic of Grandma Deb and G! I cannot believe how busy this past week was.  There was an incredible amount of things going on at work...so many meetings, so much work, and definitely not enough time to get it all done.  I asked one of my co-workers on Thursday night, as I was packing up, "Is it bad if I'm leaving and I have no idea what's in m...

A Different Point of View

This week, I have a guest blogger.  He's got quite a bit to say, so I thought I'd let him take control for one post.  Say hello to my little friend... Hi!  My name is Garrett, but you can call me G.  I'm going to be the big six-months in 9 days...and Mommy is finally letting me bang on this keyboard for a bit!  It's been a fun week...I keep trying to sleep on my belly,  but everyone keeps flipping me over to my back.  After a while, I give up, and just pop my thumb in my mouth, and go to sleep.  No biggie. I love all of the attention I get when I am at daycare...Sheila's oldest son always comes right over to me when he gets home from school, and works with me to get me to sit up on my own.  Mommy tried too, the other day, but I just keep falling over on my face.  Oh well. Mommy and Daddy keep talking about trying to feed me something called peas or green beans.  I guess I'll have to wait a few weeks to see which one they decid...

Advice to Our Children

It's been...an interesting week.  Full of work, activities, school, daycare, etc...all good, and very busy, of course.  So, I wanted to take a bit of a different angle this week, and gather some words of advice for our two children... To Ava: I hope that you grow to be a strong woman (since you're such a strong-willed girl, I don't think it's a far stretch that you will be a woman of strength.)  I pray that you stay true to your beliefs, and never let anyone mistreat you, or devalue your worth.  No matter who you may befriend, fall in love with, or work for, always be true to yourself.  Never be ashamed to make a change if you realize that you aren't being treated as you should.  I believe that if someone isn't giving you the respect that you deserve, you will have the strength to put your foot down, draw a line, or make a decision.  Respect yourself enough to remove those people who don't hold that same level of respect for you.  You are one of...
