Week 6 at Home: Birthday in Quarantine!

Hey, hey, guess who turned 44 this past week! Me! Last year my birthday fell on Easter, so most people didn't remember it. This year, it fell on a Tuesday in the middle of a global pandemic, and everyone was online, wishing me a happy day. Woohoo! Overall, it was a lovely day...I had to work, but at least I was at home...right? I had the chance to chat with my Aunt Steph, my parents stopped over (hadn't seen them since early March!) to drop off a cake and gifts, Scott and family gave me flowers, cheese curds, and wine (because he couldn't get me anything else...and that's ok!), and my friend Dana had flowers delivered to my house. Cheeriness all around! The shirt is a little hard to read, but it says: "April Birthday 2020 The year when sh!t got real! #quarantined" Beyond that, the kids had a pretty good week at the Goers Elementary/Middle School. Ava is continuing to be focused and driven and getting everything done well and on time, i

Week 5 at Home: Ho-Hum

Ok, ok, we might be getting a little bored with being at home, but we're doing a really good job on social distancing (since Scott works outside of the house, we're not going to include him on the "really good" assessment, but the other three of us are!) We had a great Easter day last Sunday...the bunny came, even though it was a blizzard, and left sweet treats for the kiddos. G commented that last year they each got 13 eggs, and this year they only got 7 each. But, hey, who's counting, right?? We enjoyed our dinner from Bourbon Butcher, and I was able to watch the Easter service online, which topped my day off nicely. This week was school-work-school-work-school-work-school-work...and then I took Friday off! It was so nice to be able to help G with his school stuff, at leisure, as opposed to trying to fit it in between meetings, and work that I needed to get done. He had a Zoom call with his classmates, as well as the school's computer teacher who live

Week 4 at Home: We Got This!

The 2nd week of distance learning was even better than the first week. G knows exactly what he needs to do each day, and his resistance to the writing pieces has reduced a bit. The meltdowns don't last nearly as long, and then he focuses and gets it done. We've put together a good pattern where we alternate school work with TV/Kindle time, as well as some screen-free time with toys. I did get some feedback from his teacher that he is doing really well with his distance learning, so I'm encouraged that we're going to make it. Ava is also doing really well...I'm so impressed by her focus. I'm also very grateful that she took Tech Ed this fall, FACs (Home Ec) this winter, and is now in Art. Her assignments are all being done on her iPad and they look great. She's been spending all of her extra time with a drawing app on her phone. Ava is such a talented artist, and she loves to spend time doing it. We're so proud of her! I had a deployment for work on

Week 3 at Home: Distance Learning Begins!

We survived the first week of distance learning! There were technology issues with the platforms that the schools use to communicate assignments and lessons to the kids, and there were definitely some struggles at home trying to get into our "new normal" routine. But, by the end of the week, I think we all had a much better idea of how this is going to go. And we were all soooo ready for the weekend to be here. I started off my Monday morning with a Zoom call for 20+ kindergartners taking place right next to me as I was attending an important meeting for me at work. G couldn't quite understand why no one was letting him talk (welcome to the world of conference calls, little man!) so he had a minor meltdown, at which point we exited his Zoom call. But, never fear, it was 1.5 hours long, so after we finished up my meeting, he was able to re-join the call with his pals. We have G's school routine down, and I think we're meeting the expectation of 2.5 hours of wor
