Bowling Bowling Bowling!

Last Sunday we hosted Ava's birthday party for her friends. Over the years, I've learned that it causes me too much stress to host a bunch of kids at our house, so when I suggested bowling to Ava, she jumped on it! We had a recommendation for a great place, somewhat close to home...and it was fun!

There were 10 kids there...they ate so much pizza and cake, and had a blast bowling together. G had never been bowling before and he came pretty close to getting the high score for the lane he was on!

Ava is also taking summer band, which means I'm working at home a few days a week so I can drive her there/pick her up for her band lessons. She's home with me during those days, and last Tuesday, the weather was fabulous, so she asked if we could take a walk when I was done working. We ended up at the neighborhood park, and it made me so happy to see her playing on the equipment. The kid in her isn't quite all gone yet!

Ava also gets nervous about bad weather that comes in, so when we had a storm role in last Thursday morning, Ava was quite happy that I was with her, so she could huddle in the office under TWO blankets as I was working. Luckily only rain followed this cloud, but it was moving so fast!

G's been doing pretty well...drop off at daycare has been a challenge for years. He gets a bit sensitive with people eating, and never wants people to watch him while he's eating, plus, he does not like seeing the food in peoples' mouths when they chew (can't say that I blame him.)

As a result, drop off is really rough, and it starts my day off on a bad note. I finally decided that while it was nice not to have to make the time to feed him breakfast here, our collective happiness level was more important. So, for the last week or so, he's been eating breakfast here in the morning, and 98% of the drop offs have been painless! It's well worth the 5 min that it takes me to make him breakfast. Overall, it means that he's having much better days at daycare. And that's good for everyone!

Friday night was family fun night in the neighborhood. Our neighbors who live 2 house down from us (on the backside) hosted a party for the families in the neighborhood. They grilled, we brought sides to share, and then we watched a few movies outside. It was so nice to finally chat with some of the neighbors that we had seen around, but hadn't officially met. Scott even joined in the fun, and met a few new guys in the 'hood. Ava pretty much knew all of the kids there, and G was happy to play with some new toys. It was a great way to kick off the weekend!

Yesterday, G and I went to a wedding reception for my good friend Chris. It was so nice to see some of my old co-workers and catch up with friends!

Since it was a busy weekend, we're enjoying laying low today, and just getting stuff done around the house. Yay for productive days!

Goodbye Sweet Spanky

This is a post that I'm not very excited to write.  As you probably know, our oldest dog, Spanky, had struggled with health issues (ear infections, seizures) his whole life, and recently, his health had severely deteriorated.  He hadn't been eating, his ear infection was so severe his face was swollen, he had a hard time getting up the stairs, and he very rarely wanted to play.  Last week we got a few tail wags from him, and he ate a few bowls of food, but it was a 50-50 chance that he would actually keep the food down. On Thursday, we made the decision that if he wasn't any better by this weekend, we were going to put him down.  I know Scott didn't want to make that decision as Spanky was a very special dog to him - he truly was his little buddy, following him around everywhere, wanting to be wherever Scott was, and howling his sadness whenever Scott would leave him. Throughout Friday night, it became clear that Spanky wasn't going to have a miraculous recovery...

Happily Ever After?

Lately, I've been adding to the Disney Princess movies in our collection.  Last week I bought Beauty and the Beast for Ava.  That was never a favorite movie of mine, but now that I've seen it several times in the last week, it's growing on me.  I figure this is a good chance for me to catch up on some of the stories that I missed out on! Watching all of these princess movies has me thinking about fairy tales...why is it that it's always the evil stepMOTHER?  Or the mom is dead, and no one has taken her place?  Very rarely is it the father who is evil, or dead.  This has actually come up as a topic in more than one conversation lately, and has me a bit intrigued.  Fairy tales are often not very happy - and usually someone dies at some point.  I was a giving an overview of Snow White to a friend of mine, and as I was going through the story, both of us were horrified at the message - mom dies, evil stepmother wants to murder her pretty stepdaugh...

26 Hours in a Day

Just yesterday morning, I was thinking to myself that I could really use a few more hours each day.  We don't sleep a whole lot, both work long hours at our jobs, try to play with Ava as much as we can at night and on the weekends, and then we have to do all of the adult-stuff...paying bills, grocery shopping, cleaning, work on side jobs, house projects, etc.  If there were only 26 hours in a day, we could: *Sleep just an extra 30 minutes - we need it since the dogs have been waking us up each weekend day at 5:30am.  What could be SO urgent that they need to get us up then?!?  You'd think we only feed them once a week, or something. *Spend an extra hour with Ava...we could go to the park every night, take an extra long bath, read a few extra stories, and just enjoy the giggles and chattiness. *Take 30 minutes to talk to each other about how things are going.  With Scott leaving for work each day before 5am, and then all of the craziness that ensues wh...
