Happy Halloween AND #10!

Whew, what a weekend! The RHSMB came in 5th overall at the Bands of America Super Regionals, and had their highest score EVER at the event. They did a fantastic job, and ended the season on a high note (hahaha.)

We also celebrated little G's TENTH birthday on Sunday. We celebrated at home, and then at a bowling alley with 8 of his closest friends, and THEN he went to one of his BFF's house and partook in HIS birthday party there (Isaac and G share the same birthday.) Talk about cake and party overload!

Last night as a 9 year old...

The big 1-0!

Loving his Penguin Slushy van gift!

In fact, there was so much birthday-ness happening on Sunday, that we decided to carry our small family celebration through to Monday night, when we were all back together for dinner. We sang and ate a very yummy Halloween-themed cake.

The next night was Halloween, and we had a Toxic Waste Hazmat person (??), a sparkly witch, and a pink dino (bonus kid!) We ate a fairly frightening-looking pepperoni pizza (but it tasted good), and then we all went trick-or-treating with the next door neighbors. It was fun and lowkey...and the kids got SO much candy.

The rest of the week was a blur...Scott's up north for deer opener, and on Saturday night, we're all scattering to different locations. I'm going out with a friend to a comedy show, G is going to my parents for a few hours, and Ava is spending the evening with her bf and his family.

We did enjoy Friday night together watching the Barbie movie and celebrating Ava passing her driver's permit! Woohoo! Now, it's time to buckle down and practice driving on the road. What an adventure that will be!

Goodbye Sweet Spanky

This is a post that I'm not very excited to write.  As you probably know, our oldest dog, Spanky, had struggled with health issues (ear infections, seizures) his whole life, and recently, his health had severely deteriorated.  He hadn't been eating, his ear infection was so severe his face was swollen, he had a hard time getting up the stairs, and he very rarely wanted to play.  Last week we got a few tail wags from him, and he ate a few bowls of food, but it was a 50-50 chance that he would actually keep the food down. On Thursday, we made the decision that if he wasn't any better by this weekend, we were going to put him down.  I know Scott didn't want to make that decision as Spanky was a very special dog to him - he truly was his little buddy, following him around everywhere, wanting to be wherever Scott was, and howling his sadness whenever Scott would leave him. Throughout Friday night, it became clear that Spanky wasn't going to have a miraculous recovery...

Grandparents, Birthdays, and Sprinklers, Oh MY!

What a whirlwind week we've had...I was trying to get everything wrapped up at work so I could take my 5-day "furlough" from last Wednesday, through tomorrow. Wednesday was my first day at home, so Ava and I had a ton of "fun" getting everything ready for the upcoming activities. I did have a wonderful massage, so that started my vacation off very well... Gramma Karen and Grampa Doug drove in from KC on Wednesday afternoon. We had a great evening catching up, and enjoying the nice weather (until the downpour that happened right as they were leaving our house!) On Thursday, Scott, Dad, Mom, and I drove down to Cannon Falls and Rochester to check out the areas for potential future homes/land for us. At some point, we'd like to move south of the Cities. Ava was a very good little girl, especially considering that she was stuck in a car for most of her FIRST BIRTHDAY!!! We went to Applebee's for lunch, and the wait staff came out singing to someone else...I...

Happily Ever After?

Lately, I've been adding to the Disney Princess movies in our collection.  Last week I bought Beauty and the Beast for Ava.  That was never a favorite movie of mine, but now that I've seen it several times in the last week, it's growing on me.  I figure this is a good chance for me to catch up on some of the stories that I missed out on! Watching all of these princess movies has me thinking about fairy tales...why is it that it's always the evil stepMOTHER?  Or the mom is dead, and no one has taken her place?  Very rarely is it the father who is evil, or dead.  This has actually come up as a topic in more than one conversation lately, and has me a bit intrigued.  Fairy tales are often not very happy - and usually someone dies at some point.  I was a giving an overview of Snow White to a friend of mine, and as I was going through the story, both of us were horrified at the message - mom dies, evil stepmother wants to murder her pretty stepdaugh...
