Saints & Trumpets

This past week was a bit different for me at work. Patterson hosted our 2nd annual Tech Days, which was 3 full days of keynote speakers, conference tracks, and hands-on activities. On Monday afternoon, I spoke (virtually) to several hundred people when I debuted the new Patterson Technology career portal. There was a small technical glitch, but I tried my best to push past it, and think it went ok! I was super happy once that was done, and could attend the rest of Tech Days as a regular employee. My favorite tracks were one given by the FBI on cyber crime, and another one on empathy (both at work, and in our personal lives.)

It was a great week, focusing on something other than my job! (Which, I still love, but it was neat to learn some new things.) On Friday, I was in the office for several hours, taking part in a discussion about how our products team can work best together. It was nice seeing team members that I hadn't seen in person in a while.

Pria snuggled into bed one morning before we needed to get up. She's such a sweetie.

Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble in Central Park - they were great!

G was busy with Summer Power this week, and enjoyed the field trips they went on. He also had swimming and taekwondo on Monday night, and then he and I started our golf lessons on Wednesday night. One of his friends is in the class with him, which made it even more fun...although, they were putting for Starbursts, so really, how much more of an incentive did they need?? We're on the search now for used, left-handed junior golf clubs. They are a bit more elusive than right-handed ones.

RHSMB started up again for the summer, so Ava was gone M-Th nights, 5-9pm. Thank goodness we carpool with another family! But, it was nice to see parents again that I hadn't seen since this past January. I was able to catch-up with a few people, and may have even gotten a job lead for Ava that could potentially work with the marching band schedule.

Even though this week tired her out, I think it's been good for Ava to see her older friends, and get out of the house in the evenings. On Saturday morning, the RHSMB had a fundraising car wash, so Ava was put to work for several hours. A big thanks to our friends and family who bought tickets from her!

Next summer should be easier (from a driving perspective), because our "new" 3rd car was delivered this week. It's a 2008 Honda Pilot, and perfect for a first time driver to learn on. Scott needs to work on the rear suspension, and then hopefully it'll be good to go for her. She thinks it's cool, and G thinks it's neat that it can seat up to 8!

G and I went to the Saints (minor league baseball team, which is the farm team for the Twins) on Friday night. He did really well, considering the game didn't start until 7pm, and we were there for 3.5 hours. The Saints lost, but we really enjoyed watching the game, and enjoyed the fireworks after.

Scott was busy with work this week, so we really haven't spent much time together as a full family. We're looking forward to our family dinner this evening (Saturday) and will spend some time around our fire table on the deck, so we can enjoy some of the Minnesota (hot and muggy, lol) weather.

Goodbye Sweet Spanky

This is a post that I'm not very excited to write.  As you probably know, our oldest dog, Spanky, had struggled with health issues (ear infections, seizures) his whole life, and recently, his health had severely deteriorated.  He hadn't been eating, his ear infection was so severe his face was swollen, he had a hard time getting up the stairs, and he very rarely wanted to play.  Last week we got a few tail wags from him, and he ate a few bowls of food, but it was a 50-50 chance that he would actually keep the food down. On Thursday, we made the decision that if he wasn't any better by this weekend, we were going to put him down.  I know Scott didn't want to make that decision as Spanky was a very special dog to him - he truly was his little buddy, following him around everywhere, wanting to be wherever Scott was, and howling his sadness whenever Scott would leave him. Throughout Friday night, it became clear that Spanky wasn't going to have a miraculous recovery...

Happily Ever After?

Lately, I've been adding to the Disney Princess movies in our collection.  Last week I bought Beauty and the Beast for Ava.  That was never a favorite movie of mine, but now that I've seen it several times in the last week, it's growing on me.  I figure this is a good chance for me to catch up on some of the stories that I missed out on! Watching all of these princess movies has me thinking about fairy tales...why is it that it's always the evil stepMOTHER?  Or the mom is dead, and no one has taken her place?  Very rarely is it the father who is evil, or dead.  This has actually come up as a topic in more than one conversation lately, and has me a bit intrigued.  Fairy tales are often not very happy - and usually someone dies at some point.  I was a giving an overview of Snow White to a friend of mine, and as I was going through the story, both of us were horrified at the message - mom dies, evil stepmother wants to murder her pretty stepdaugh...

What's Black & White?

It's officially summer in Minnesota.  We've passed the 1-2 weeks where it's pleasant outside, and have moved into the hot and humid midwestern summer season.  This calls for some FUN in the SUN!  We were hoping that Ava would enjoy the water a little more this year than she did last year (I took her to several weeks of swimming lessons in a lap pool, where the temp of the water was just a wee bit too chilly.  It didn't go well for either of us.)  Plus, she has a new swimming suit I was anxious to have her try out, so at the very least, I knew she would look cute. :) So, Daddy decided to set up the sprinkler for her one night after dinner.  This, too, did not go very well.  Perhaps it's because he sprung the sprinkler on her without warning, causing her to run to me, with fear in her eyes, and very wet hands...  After that, we never got her to come near the sprinkler (way to go, Daddy), and she decided to play with my potted flowers...with h...
