Fresh & Clean

Ah, spring is officially here! The snow is gone (for now), the days are getting longer, and spring break starts on Monday for the kiddos. Plus, we have a fresh coat of paint on most of our walls (only two bathrooms and the guest room are left with the builders paint.) Having those fresh and clean walls makes the biggest difference to feeling like it's a clean start...before we put things back, we're taking the time to wipe everything down and do a deep cleaning on things. Plus, it might be time to re-think what we have out on our shelves. It's a good time for a fresh start...it's spring!

Both kids are excited at not having school for the next week...I've heard Ava say that she really just wants to do a couple of builds (she likes to build really neat houses in Roblox) and G will find a million different things to do around here. I'm excited that we only have one week left of our quarantine...next Friday we're going to do a fun community activity at Central Park (weather permitting) and then maybe an Easter Egg hunt for G at a local technical college. It will be so nice to be able to be out with people again! And Target...I can't wait to go back! :)

Both Ava and I tested negative again this past week. We'll test again on Wednesday, and then one final time the following Monday, so we'll know it's safe for her to go back to her baton class on Tuesday the 30th. At this point, I feel that we're probably in the clear since both Scott and G tested positive 17 days ago...but, we'll follow the rules, just to keep everyone safe.

I made a really yummy coffee cake last weekend, and I think we're going to tackle some peanut butter cookies today. I'm going to use my new KitchenAid stand mixer...I've had it for a few months and have yet to pull it out. I need to make sure it was worth the investment!

Our St. Patrick's Day was reaaaaally low key. Not even green beer! But, I did make some broccoli cheese soup for dinner, so at least we had something green to eat that night. G had set up a snack box for the leprechaun to visit on Tuesday night. He was very insistent in saying that it wasn't a trap, as well as the fact that the leprechaun didn't even need to leave him anything. I heard Ava exclaim more than once that the leprechaun never came to visit when she was little, so why would it come now?! Excellent question, Ava! I'm sure we can chat about that when you're older. :)

"This is not a trap. There is a nut." G researched what leprechauns like to eat...good thing nuts were on the list! And our little leprechaun was very polite and wrote a thank you note for leaving him a peanut to shell and eat. ("Thank you for the nut!")

I love this so much...G drew this for art class. He was so pleased that he went against the rules and added sunglasses even though his teacher didn't ask him to. I found a slightly modified version of this later with a pair of eyes floating next to the head with an arrow pointing back to the face...that way we are all aware of what's under the sunglasses. Haha!

I'm taking next Friday off to enjoy the last day of spring break with the kids. I'm looking forward to a long weekend, and to have a chance to spend some time outdoors with them (weather permitting...this time of year is always a crap shoot!)

Scott is back at work, and it seems like his cough is almost gone. He's getting back into the swing of working and being active. He lost 20 lbs from being sick, and his full appetite isn't back yet. But, he's getting there. Fingers crossed that I can get the vaccine soon, and we'll be able to be around family and friends in the near future!

Goodbye Sweet Spanky

This is a post that I'm not very excited to write.  As you probably know, our oldest dog, Spanky, had struggled with health issues (ear infections, seizures) his whole life, and recently, his health had severely deteriorated.  He hadn't been eating, his ear infection was so severe his face was swollen, he had a hard time getting up the stairs, and he very rarely wanted to play.  Last week we got a few tail wags from him, and he ate a few bowls of food, but it was a 50-50 chance that he would actually keep the food down. On Thursday, we made the decision that if he wasn't any better by this weekend, we were going to put him down.  I know Scott didn't want to make that decision as Spanky was a very special dog to him - he truly was his little buddy, following him around everywhere, wanting to be wherever Scott was, and howling his sadness whenever Scott would leave him. Throughout Friday night, it became clear that Spanky wasn't going to have a miraculous recovery...

Happily Ever After?

Lately, I've been adding to the Disney Princess movies in our collection.  Last week I bought Beauty and the Beast for Ava.  That was never a favorite movie of mine, but now that I've seen it several times in the last week, it's growing on me.  I figure this is a good chance for me to catch up on some of the stories that I missed out on! Watching all of these princess movies has me thinking about fairy tales...why is it that it's always the evil stepMOTHER?  Or the mom is dead, and no one has taken her place?  Very rarely is it the father who is evil, or dead.  This has actually come up as a topic in more than one conversation lately, and has me a bit intrigued.  Fairy tales are often not very happy - and usually someone dies at some point.  I was a giving an overview of Snow White to a friend of mine, and as I was going through the story, both of us were horrified at the message - mom dies, evil stepmother wants to murder her pretty stepdaugh...

26 Hours in a Day

Just yesterday morning, I was thinking to myself that I could really use a few more hours each day.  We don't sleep a whole lot, both work long hours at our jobs, try to play with Ava as much as we can at night and on the weekends, and then we have to do all of the adult-stuff...paying bills, grocery shopping, cleaning, work on side jobs, house projects, etc.  If there were only 26 hours in a day, we could: *Sleep just an extra 30 minutes - we need it since the dogs have been waking us up each weekend day at 5:30am.  What could be SO urgent that they need to get us up then?!?  You'd think we only feed them once a week, or something. *Spend an extra hour with Ava...we could go to the park every night, take an extra long bath, read a few extra stories, and just enjoy the giggles and chattiness. *Take 30 minutes to talk to each other about how things are going.  With Scott leaving for work each day before 5am, and then all of the craziness that ensues wh...
