Turkey...Turkey...Turkey!

As much as I love shorter work weeks, it sure is hard to get everything done that we need to. My three days at work this week were a whirlwind of trying to transition more projects to my co-workers. I have two more projects to transition, and just two more business days at BIW! I'm fairly certain that my last day there will be unproductive, so I really only have one more business day to wrap up everything - yikes! My first day at my new job is December 5, so after I walk out of the BIW doors on Tuesday, November 27, I will be headed to my going-away happy hour, and then I have five business days to decompress before my new adventure begins!

In addition to the work chaos, we also hosted Thanksgiving. My parents and my friend Emilie joined us for a fun afternoon/evening filled with food and laughter. A few years ago, we discovered how much easier it was to source the entire meal from Lunds & Byerlys, and all we need to do is heat it up - and they even give a helpful grid so you know exactly when the different food items need to be heated up, so it's easier to plan the oven space.

And...it's really good food! We supplemented with a butternut squash and an extra pie (no pumpkin for me and Emilie, so a cherry pie was a welcome addition) and we had some leftovers, but not a crazy amount...just enough for us to east for lunches over the next few days. I love not wasting food!

Whenever I think about Thanksgiving and turkey, I think about my most favorite clip from a game show:

Traditionally, this is the weekend that we decorate the house for Christmas, and this year was no exception. Scott worked both Friday and Saturday, so my mom came over and helped the kids and I decorate the tree. It's amazing how much more quickly it goes with two sets of eager hands, excited to put the ornaments on the tree.

Earlier in November, I had picked up some mulling spices, so I also brewed a yummy apple cider/cranberry warm beverage for everyone to enjoy when the tree decorating was done. It was SO good!

The tree looks tiny here, but it's really not that small!

We don't have a flake of snow on the ground, but that's a-ok! Without a doubt, we will have snow this winter, so I'm enjoying the sunny blue skies, and the warm temp of 25 degrees... We've had less snow than normal so far, yet the temps are much lower than normal, too. I'm not sure what's better...no snow and frigid air, or lots of snow and warmer air. Right now, I'm good with the clear streets!

Ava was being silly with Pringles!

I realized that Black Friday came and went, and we didn't buy anything. We need to get moving on the Christmas lists for everyone! I've already made a great dent in the gifts that we're buying, but it would be good to get it wrapped up in the next week or so. Ava informed us that her Christmas list is three pages long (and growing)...ummm.... The kids already have so many toys that this year I want us to focus on minimal toy purchases, and redirect our attention to activities that we can do together. Less waste and better memories for all! Wishing you an amazing start to the holidays!

Goodbye Sweet Spanky

This is a post that I'm not very excited to write.  As you probably know, our oldest dog, Spanky, had struggled with health issues (ear infections, seizures) his whole life, and recently, his health had severely deteriorated.  He hadn't been eating, his ear infection was so severe his face was swollen, he had a hard time getting up the stairs, and he very rarely wanted to play.  Last week we got a few tail wags from him, and he ate a few bowls of food, but it was a 50-50 chance that he would actually keep the food down. On Thursday, we made the decision that if he wasn't any better by this weekend, we were going to put him down.  I know Scott didn't want to make that decision as Spanky was a very special dog to him - he truly was his little buddy, following him around everywhere, wanting to be wherever Scott was, and howling his sadness whenever Scott would leave him. Throughout Friday night, it became clear that Spanky wasn't going to have a miraculous recovery...

Happily Ever After?

Lately, I've been adding to the Disney Princess movies in our collection.  Last week I bought Beauty and the Beast for Ava.  That was never a favorite movie of mine, but now that I've seen it several times in the last week, it's growing on me.  I figure this is a good chance for me to catch up on some of the stories that I missed out on! Watching all of these princess movies has me thinking about fairy tales...why is it that it's always the evil stepMOTHER?  Or the mom is dead, and no one has taken her place?  Very rarely is it the father who is evil, or dead.  This has actually come up as a topic in more than one conversation lately, and has me a bit intrigued.  Fairy tales are often not very happy - and usually someone dies at some point.  I was a giving an overview of Snow White to a friend of mine, and as I was going through the story, both of us were horrified at the message - mom dies, evil stepmother wants to murder her pretty stepdaugh...

26 Hours in a Day

Just yesterday morning, I was thinking to myself that I could really use a few more hours each day.  We don't sleep a whole lot, both work long hours at our jobs, try to play with Ava as much as we can at night and on the weekends, and then we have to do all of the adult-stuff...paying bills, grocery shopping, cleaning, work on side jobs, house projects, etc.  If there were only 26 hours in a day, we could: *Sleep just an extra 30 minutes - we need it since the dogs have been waking us up each weekend day at 5:30am.  What could be SO urgent that they need to get us up then?!?  You'd think we only feed them once a week, or something. *Spend an extra hour with Ava...we could go to the park every night, take an extra long bath, read a few extra stories, and just enjoy the giggles and chattiness. *Take 30 minutes to talk to each other about how things are going.  With Scott leaving for work each day before 5am, and then all of the craziness that ensues wh...
