Back to RHSMB Activities

Marching band season has officially started! On Tuesday night, the kids kicked off the season with the first full marching band session. Ava met all of the incoming freshman, and she's feeling very positive about the group. They are hoping for 16 trumpets in the section this year (we'll see how that shakes out.)

And coming right along with the start of RHSMB is the first big fundraiser of the year. I'm the lead for the Heggies fundraiser, and I've been working on it for months, but it finally came to fruition this past Wednesday - it was pizza delivery day. 1300 total pizzas were sold! The weather was decent, I had plenty of volunteers (Ava rounded up a bunch of her friends to help with sorting/counting, and they're not even in band), and we were only short one pizza at the end of the night. I am so pleased that everything went well, and that I'm officially wrapped up as the lead. I will be happy to train and hand-off this responsibility to someone else next year.

Our family (mostly Scott 😀) sold 81 pizzas, so after Ava loaded them up at school, she and Scott headed out to the local spots to drop them off. We are so grateful for all of the support!

As a reward for all of my hard work, I treated myself to a glass of wine with dinner, after the pizza delivery was all done

We also decided to get new phones last week, so it's been a busy week of tracking deliveries and ordering all of the extras (screen protectors, cases, etc.) Ava picked out her first iPhone and she loves it. Scott and I switched from Motorola phones (which we've had for many, many years) to Google Pixel Pros. I haven't had a chance to switch all of our stuff over yet, but I'm looking forward to a smaller phone that fits better in my hands. We've decided to give G one of our current phones once he's done with 5th grade. There's nothing wrong with them, and this will help us avoid any potential phone price hike that we might be looking at this fall (thanks, tariffs!)

I'm volunteering for another fundraiser on Sunday afternoon (helping to setup silent auction items) at a local brewery, and then several of my friends are coming to meet me there, and we're going to have a happy hour! The weather looks perfect for sitting outside and enjoying the company.

This past Thursday, I went into the office for a product meeting, and we went out for a happy hour afterwards. At the end of the hh, it was just the women who were left and we had an amazing time talking and getting to know each other better. We had very open discussions about politics and the state of the world. And we all left feeling like we need to keep this going on a regular basis. I miss building relationships by not being in the office, so I do think it's a priority to make an effort to get together with coworkers regularly.

Looking forward to the spring-like weather we have coming up next week...it's so great to see the bright sun again!

Goodbye Sweet Spanky

This is a post that I'm not very excited to write.  As you probably know, our oldest dog, Spanky, had struggled with health issues (ear infections, seizures) his whole life, and recently, his health had severely deteriorated.  He hadn't been eating, his ear infection was so severe his face was swollen, he had a hard time getting up the stairs, and he very rarely wanted to play.  Last week we got a few tail wags from him, and he ate a few bowls of food, but it was a 50-50 chance that he would actually keep the food down. On Thursday, we made the decision that if he wasn't any better by this weekend, we were going to put him down.  I know Scott didn't want to make that decision as Spanky was a very special dog to him - he truly was his little buddy, following him around everywhere, wanting to be wherever Scott was, and howling his sadness whenever Scott would leave him. Throughout Friday night, it became clear that Spanky wasn't going to have a miraculous recovery...

Grandparents, Birthdays, and Sprinklers, Oh MY!

What a whirlwind week we've had...I was trying to get everything wrapped up at work so I could take my 5-day "furlough" from last Wednesday, through tomorrow. Wednesday was my first day at home, so Ava and I had a ton of "fun" getting everything ready for the upcoming activities. I did have a wonderful massage, so that started my vacation off very well... Gramma Karen and Grampa Doug drove in from KC on Wednesday afternoon. We had a great evening catching up, and enjoying the nice weather (until the downpour that happened right as they were leaving our house!) On Thursday, Scott, Dad, Mom, and I drove down to Cannon Falls and Rochester to check out the areas for potential future homes/land for us. At some point, we'd like to move south of the Cities. Ava was a very good little girl, especially considering that she was stuck in a car for most of her FIRST BIRTHDAY!!! We went to Applebee's for lunch, and the wait staff came out singing to someone else...I...

Happily Ever After?

Lately, I've been adding to the Disney Princess movies in our collection.  Last week I bought Beauty and the Beast for Ava.  That was never a favorite movie of mine, but now that I've seen it several times in the last week, it's growing on me.  I figure this is a good chance for me to catch up on some of the stories that I missed out on! Watching all of these princess movies has me thinking about fairy tales...why is it that it's always the evil stepMOTHER?  Or the mom is dead, and no one has taken her place?  Very rarely is it the father who is evil, or dead.  This has actually come up as a topic in more than one conversation lately, and has me a bit intrigued.  Fairy tales are often not very happy - and usually someone dies at some point.  I was a giving an overview of Snow White to a friend of mine, and as I was going through the story, both of us were horrified at the message - mom dies, evil stepmother wants to murder her pretty stepdaugh...
