Apple Time

Oooof, what a weather event we had this week! We all went to bed on Thursday night thinking that there would be a standard storm moving through. Turns out that it was way more than just a thunderstorm...the wind was incredibly strong (recorded at 70+ mph) and there was a ton of damage in our town. We were very lucky, and didn't have any damage at our house, except a hard-sided cooler that was on our deck. It went flying off the deck and the top broke off. We ended up losing power from 3am-9:30am on Friday, and even Ava's school was cancelled. G's school had a two-hour late start, so to kill some time before his drop-off (and to charge up my phone), G and I took a drive around town to assess the severity of loss. I think the highlight of the trip was that he saw a shed that had been completely crushed. Yikes!

This was one of our only light sources to use while getting ready on Friday morning

There were confirmed tornadoes in the next town(s) over, so I'm incredibly grateful that it stayed about a mile south of us. The rest of Friday was kind of a mess after that. Lots of weird things happened at work, and it didn't feel like a very productive day. Definitely not how I like to sign off for the weekend.

But, we made up for it by hanging out with the book club mom (and kids) last night. It's perfect fall weather to be outside, with a light jacket and a bonfire. We had great chats, but we noticed that it's not exactly a relaxing evening now that the kids are attending. But, the kids get along (for the most part) so we only have to step in a referee when they start getting a little snippy with each other.

We have learned our lesson not to wait too long to go to the apple orchard in the fall. We hit up the smaller orchard that we've been visiting for the last several years. It's the perfect size...there's a little tractor ride, a small store, and a playground for the kids. This year, we splurged and got a piece of pie, a slushie, and some apple cider donuts to enjoy after the apple picking was done. Scott also picked up some BBQ sauces...they taste great on chicken! We ended up with 1/2 peck of Honeycrisp and 1/2 peck of Honeygold. I'm looking forward to attempting to make an apple pie this year.

Excited to use the apple picker - we usually forget to grab one of these, but not this year!

On the tractor!

This rotting apple had so many bees and a beautiful butterfly enjoying its sweet juice

Aiming high!

He got it!

Every Sunday we've been trying to hit up a new park in the area, so last Sunday, we went to Goat Hill Park in Eagan. G had so much fun on the different equipment!

Last Sunday, we went on a drive and stumbled upon a big park, just a few miles away from us. I promised G we would check it out this Sunday. He promptly reminded me of this on Saturday morning. :)

It seems like a good weekend to enjoy some crisp cool air in the evenings, and an evening around our new fire table. As long as there isn't a tornado, we should be good!

Goodbye Sweet Spanky

This is a post that I'm not very excited to write.  As you probably know, our oldest dog, Spanky, had struggled with health issues (ear infections, seizures) his whole life, and recently, his health had severely deteriorated.  He hadn't been eating, his ear infection was so severe his face was swollen, he had a hard time getting up the stairs, and he very rarely wanted to play.  Last week we got a few tail wags from him, and he ate a few bowls of food, but it was a 50-50 chance that he would actually keep the food down. On Thursday, we made the decision that if he wasn't any better by this weekend, we were going to put him down.  I know Scott didn't want to make that decision as Spanky was a very special dog to him - he truly was his little buddy, following him around everywhere, wanting to be wherever Scott was, and howling his sadness whenever Scott would leave him. Throughout Friday night, it became clear that Spanky wasn't going to have a miraculous recovery...

Happily Ever After?

Lately, I've been adding to the Disney Princess movies in our collection.  Last week I bought Beauty and the Beast for Ava.  That was never a favorite movie of mine, but now that I've seen it several times in the last week, it's growing on me.  I figure this is a good chance for me to catch up on some of the stories that I missed out on! Watching all of these princess movies has me thinking about fairy tales...why is it that it's always the evil stepMOTHER?  Or the mom is dead, and no one has taken her place?  Very rarely is it the father who is evil, or dead.  This has actually come up as a topic in more than one conversation lately, and has me a bit intrigued.  Fairy tales are often not very happy - and usually someone dies at some point.  I was a giving an overview of Snow White to a friend of mine, and as I was going through the story, both of us were horrified at the message - mom dies, evil stepmother wants to murder her pretty stepdaugh...

26 Hours in a Day

Just yesterday morning, I was thinking to myself that I could really use a few more hours each day.  We don't sleep a whole lot, both work long hours at our jobs, try to play with Ava as much as we can at night and on the weekends, and then we have to do all of the adult-stuff...paying bills, grocery shopping, cleaning, work on side jobs, house projects, etc.  If there were only 26 hours in a day, we could: *Sleep just an extra 30 minutes - we need it since the dogs have been waking us up each weekend day at 5:30am.  What could be SO urgent that they need to get us up then?!?  You'd think we only feed them once a week, or something. *Spend an extra hour with Ava...we could go to the park every night, take an extra long bath, read a few extra stories, and just enjoy the giggles and chattiness. *Take 30 minutes to talk to each other about how things are going.  With Scott leaving for work each day before 5am, and then all of the craziness that ensues wh...
