Do You Want to Build Jeffy the Snowmannnnnn?

The weather was so beautiful and snowy last Sunday that I felt compelled to get G out of the house to soak in some sunshine. Let's set the stage...it was Groundhog Day and Phil did NOT see his shadow (hooray!) There were bright blue skies, an air temp of 42 degrees, and a wind chill of 34 degrees...all in all, not a horrible February day in Minnesota. We've certainly seen worse!

We trekked over to the neighborhood park, and slogged through the slushy, yet crunchy, snow of the parking lot to the play area. G explored the forgotten play equipment, and he made the tiniest snowman imaginable. Seriously. It was a snowball. He was saving all of his snowman-making skills for the adventure that was waiting back at home. Scott had promised him they would build a big snowman once we got back from the park. And so they did! Even Ava joined in the fun (I was so happy to see her come out of the house and have some outside activity time.)

There was some debate over his name, but we went with Jeffy. Ava does not accept that name since that's what G picked. Sigh....

I'm not really sure why Scott gave Jeffy a carrot mohawk, but I think it add character? Maybe? In any case, the coal fell off of Jeffy's face, and Scott took most of the carrots away and put them under our front porch (we know there are bunnies there), so now we're left with a snowman with two arms, two carrot horns, and a nose. Super weird to see that every day this week as I arrive at home...but at least he's guarding the house well. :)

On a non-weather note...we had a nice surprise when we got our weekly local paper on Friday. The Dance-Twirl team was featured as winning the state championship in several events, and Ava's picture was in the paper! The pic was from two events prior, and Ava's Performance Team didn't win the state title, but shhhh, no one needs to know that but you and me... :) It was neat seeing her pic in the paper, regardless!

Today is a typical Feb day, as we are in the middle of a serious snowstorm. Scott's got his plow hooked up, and will be taking G plowing with him this later this morning. Fun stuff, but I'm happy I get to stay at home and watch the snow fall from the inside.

Goodbye Sweet Spanky

This is a post that I'm not very excited to write.  As you probably know, our oldest dog, Spanky, had struggled with health issues (ear infections, seizures) his whole life, and recently, his health had severely deteriorated.  He hadn't been eating, his ear infection was so severe his face was swollen, he had a hard time getting up the stairs, and he very rarely wanted to play.  Last week we got a few tail wags from him, and he ate a few bowls of food, but it was a 50-50 chance that he would actually keep the food down. On Thursday, we made the decision that if he wasn't any better by this weekend, we were going to put him down.  I know Scott didn't want to make that decision as Spanky was a very special dog to him - he truly was his little buddy, following him around everywhere, wanting to be wherever Scott was, and howling his sadness whenever Scott would leave him. Throughout Friday night, it became clear that Spanky wasn't going to have a miraculous recovery...

Grandparents, Birthdays, and Sprinklers, Oh MY!

What a whirlwind week we've had...I was trying to get everything wrapped up at work so I could take my 5-day "furlough" from last Wednesday, through tomorrow. Wednesday was my first day at home, so Ava and I had a ton of "fun" getting everything ready for the upcoming activities. I did have a wonderful massage, so that started my vacation off very well... Gramma Karen and Grampa Doug drove in from KC on Wednesday afternoon. We had a great evening catching up, and enjoying the nice weather (until the downpour that happened right as they were leaving our house!) On Thursday, Scott, Dad, Mom, and I drove down to Cannon Falls and Rochester to check out the areas for potential future homes/land for us. At some point, we'd like to move south of the Cities. Ava was a very good little girl, especially considering that she was stuck in a car for most of her FIRST BIRTHDAY!!! We went to Applebee's for lunch, and the wait staff came out singing to someone else...I...

Happily Ever After?

Lately, I've been adding to the Disney Princess movies in our collection.  Last week I bought Beauty and the Beast for Ava.  That was never a favorite movie of mine, but now that I've seen it several times in the last week, it's growing on me.  I figure this is a good chance for me to catch up on some of the stories that I missed out on! Watching all of these princess movies has me thinking about fairy tales...why is it that it's always the evil stepMOTHER?  Or the mom is dead, and no one has taken her place?  Very rarely is it the father who is evil, or dead.  This has actually come up as a topic in more than one conversation lately, and has me a bit intrigued.  Fairy tales are often not very happy - and usually someone dies at some point.  I was a giving an overview of Snow White to a friend of mine, and as I was going through the story, both of us were horrified at the message - mom dies, evil stepmother wants to murder her pretty stepdaugh...
