Winter 2020 Baton Competition

Sooooo, this was another week where I didn't take many pics. Just one, actually.

Yesterday, Ava and the other Performance Team members took part in the Winter 2020 competition for twirlers. I think these girls want to do well, but it's always a rough performance for them. Ava almost caught her one-spin, and at one point, they all caught the batons that were thrown to each other, so that was an exciting moment. :) One of the other moms and I have talked for a while about what we can do to help them practice. We still don't have an answer, but I've been trying to figure out what will motivate Ava to *want* to do well. I'm also encouraging her to explore joining the track team, as well as looking into being a part of the spring musical (both things that she has expressed interest in previously.) She also gets to choose her language of choice to learn, and she has chosen Chinese. I have forewarned her that I will be of absolutely no help to her, but she is excited to learn it, so we'll focus on that!

In any case, the girls placed 2nd in the baton competition (yay), but that's only because there were two teams in that category. It's ok, they each got a pin, so they have something to show for it.

Besides that...what happened this week? Ava had fun with making tacos in her FACs (home ec) unit at school, and she has an upcoming ski field trip this Tuesday. I can't tell if she's nervous or excited...she has never skied before, and the field trip will include lessons, so I hope she looks at it as a fun day!

G had a bit of a rough end to the week...I talked to the principal once and his teacher twice on Friday. Whoooooo. He was definitely ready for the weekend. And, we've made an appointment to get him into therapy. There's a clinic right in town, so we're going to start with a parents-only meeting, and see where it goes from there. He's such a sweet, bright boy, but he gets so angry at times. I just hope they can help us, help him. I may or may not share his progress on this blog, as it's fairly personal, and very emotional for us right now.

I attended a wine tasting/pairing/buying party on Friday night, and spent the evening learning all about wines and what foods will work with each. I put in a large order, so our wine cabinet will be fully stocked...esp with fizzy, light wines, perfect for spring and summer. YUM!

On another positive note, our basement will be fully mudded and taped, and will have a ceiling by the end of this coming week. Hooray! Then we can move onto painting, flooring, trim work, etc. Exciting stuff! And, it will be SO nice to have an extra living space where the kids can hang out.

Today is going to be getting the basement ready for the upcoming work, as well as Grandpa Doug coming over to help us install our new Nest doorbell. Lots of time at home today, which I love for Sundays!

Grandparents, Birthdays, and Sprinklers, Oh MY!

What a whirlwind week we've had...I was trying to get everything wrapped up at work so I could take my 5-day "furlough" from last Wednesday, through tomorrow. Wednesday was my first day at home, so Ava and I had a ton of "fun" getting everything ready for the upcoming activities. I did have a wonderful massage, so that started my vacation off very well... Gramma Karen and Grampa Doug drove in from KC on Wednesday afternoon. We had a great evening catching up, and enjoying the nice weather (until the downpour that happened right as they were leaving our house!) On Thursday, Scott, Dad, Mom, and I drove down to Cannon Falls and Rochester to check out the areas for potential future homes/land for us. At some point, we'd like to move south of the Cities. Ava was a very good little girl, especially considering that she was stuck in a car for most of her FIRST BIRTHDAY!!! We went to Applebee's for lunch, and the wait staff came out singing to someone else...I...

Goodbye Sweet Spanky

This is a post that I'm not very excited to write.  As you probably know, our oldest dog, Spanky, had struggled with health issues (ear infections, seizures) his whole life, and recently, his health had severely deteriorated.  He hadn't been eating, his ear infection was so severe his face was swollen, he had a hard time getting up the stairs, and he very rarely wanted to play.  Last week we got a few tail wags from him, and he ate a few bowls of food, but it was a 50-50 chance that he would actually keep the food down. On Thursday, we made the decision that if he wasn't any better by this weekend, we were going to put him down.  I know Scott didn't want to make that decision as Spanky was a very special dog to him - he truly was his little buddy, following him around everywhere, wanting to be wherever Scott was, and howling his sadness whenever Scott would leave him. Throughout Friday night, it became clear that Spanky wasn't going to have a miraculous recovery...

Waffles and Helmets

Ava, Grandma Karen and I had a great end to the weekend last Sunday.  We took a little adventure to Black: Coffee and Waffles, which is a small little place by the U which serves...waffles!  I chose to have a savory waffle, Grandma Karen chose a fruit and granola waffle, and Ava chose to build her own with cinnamon, caramel, whipped cream, and marshmallows.  Sweeeeeet! It was neat going someplace we hadn't been before, plus it gives Ava exposure to more than just her suburban life.  She needs that.  We then went and played at a local park, and Ava made a few new friends.  It was perfect weather to sit on a bench and catch up with my mom!  After 30 min or so, we rounded up Ava and headed off to the Wild Rumpus bookstore in the Linden Hills neighborhood of Minneapolis (by Lake Harriet.)  We saw lots and lots of animals there (cats, chinchillas, rats, ferrets, birds) but no chickens!  Bummer!  It took forever to get Ava to narrow dow...
