Winding Down...

The school year is winding down, and we're able to take a breath and enjoy the small moments. Ava will be playing in the band at the RHS graduation this on Saturday night. I have several friends who have senior kiddos, and I'm having a hard time not crying for all of them. I think it's because I have realized that in one year, Ava will be graduating. It's exciting and normal, but also heartbreaking.

This past week, Ava and I attended a paint night at a local restaurant. By the end of the two hours, I was ready to head out to go home...and Ava could have stayed longer to keep working on her painting. She truly enjoys painting, so it's a good thing she's going to head to school to be an art teacher!

One of G's friends is a pretty good artist, as well. She brought supplies to school this week where she could paint on the kids hands...her version of tattoos. Check out this axolotl she drew on G!

Red Pine held their end-of-year celebration on Friday night. So, I pulled up a blanket and camped out while G ran around with his friends, jumped in the bounce houses, ate popcorn and popsicles, and ruled the playground! This will probably be one of the last times I will be able to hang out with the parents of his friends, as they are all heading to a different middle school (and then high school) next year. One of them has been G's friend since they were in daycare together!

Last Friday of elementary school - he looks so grown up

This Saturday, I'm heading to RHS to help with setup for the senior party, which takes place after graduation tonight. I'm taking the morning/early afternoon shift so I don't anticipate it'll be super busy, but I'll be happy to help out where I can. It's tradition for junior parents to step in and help out so senior parents don't need to carry the burden all by themselves.

Once that's out of the way, we're looking forward to enjoying the final weekend before the kids are done with the 24/25 school year!

Goodbye Sweet Spanky

This is a post that I'm not very excited to write.  As you probably know, our oldest dog, Spanky, had struggled with health issues (ear infections, seizures) his whole life, and recently, his health had severely deteriorated.  He hadn't been eating, his ear infection was so severe his face was swollen, he had a hard time getting up the stairs, and he very rarely wanted to play.  Last week we got a few tail wags from him, and he ate a few bowls of food, but it was a 50-50 chance that he would actually keep the food down. On Thursday, we made the decision that if he wasn't any better by this weekend, we were going to put him down.  I know Scott didn't want to make that decision as Spanky was a very special dog to him - he truly was his little buddy, following him around everywhere, wanting to be wherever Scott was, and howling his sadness whenever Scott would leave him. Throughout Friday night, it became clear that Spanky wasn't going to have a miraculous recovery...

Grandparents, Birthdays, and Sprinklers, Oh MY!

What a whirlwind week we've had...I was trying to get everything wrapped up at work so I could take my 5-day "furlough" from last Wednesday, through tomorrow. Wednesday was my first day at home, so Ava and I had a ton of "fun" getting everything ready for the upcoming activities. I did have a wonderful massage, so that started my vacation off very well... Gramma Karen and Grampa Doug drove in from KC on Wednesday afternoon. We had a great evening catching up, and enjoying the nice weather (until the downpour that happened right as they were leaving our house!) On Thursday, Scott, Dad, Mom, and I drove down to Cannon Falls and Rochester to check out the areas for potential future homes/land for us. At some point, we'd like to move south of the Cities. Ava was a very good little girl, especially considering that she was stuck in a car for most of her FIRST BIRTHDAY!!! We went to Applebee's for lunch, and the wait staff came out singing to someone else...I...

Happily Ever After?

Lately, I've been adding to the Disney Princess movies in our collection.  Last week I bought Beauty and the Beast for Ava.  That was never a favorite movie of mine, but now that I've seen it several times in the last week, it's growing on me.  I figure this is a good chance for me to catch up on some of the stories that I missed out on! Watching all of these princess movies has me thinking about fairy tales...why is it that it's always the evil stepMOTHER?  Or the mom is dead, and no one has taken her place?  Very rarely is it the father who is evil, or dead.  This has actually come up as a topic in more than one conversation lately, and has me a bit intrigued.  Fairy tales are often not very happy - and usually someone dies at some point.  I was a giving an overview of Snow White to a friend of mine, and as I was going through the story, both of us were horrified at the message - mom dies, evil stepmother wants to murder her pretty stepdaugh...
