A Week of Play Dates

We had a packed calendar this week - lots of family and friend playdates to look forward to.  Mommy even had a chance to get in a few hours at the driving range - I think I'm ready to golf nine holes now!  Needless to say, it was a fun, but busy week.

Monday - we spent recovering from Ava's birthday party/Father's Day celebration.  We needed a night to catch up with things around the house!

Tuesday - we had plans, but they were changed, so we had a free night to go to the playground down the street from us.  It was fun...except there were a lot of kids there, and no other adults.  Weird.  I became the person the kids came to when they needed help getting down from the equipment, or if they couldn't reach something.  Odd, especially since I'm not really a kid-friendly kind of person (anyone who knows me, knows this!)  Scott even stepped in and had to yell at a few teenagers to stop lighting the playground mulch on fire.  I felt so old...and responsible!

I love this one...she was trying to copy these boys on the pully-thingy.  Yeah, she's not shy at all!

Wednesday - we had Ava's two-year appointment.  She's doing great, and is apparently a fabulous eater!  She's 75th percentile for height, but 90th for weight...atta girl!  She also made a beautiful crown at daycare.  My little princess.

Thursday - we met up with Scott's sister, her husband, and their two sons to go to the playground.  Hunter (4) had a great time, and Ava tried her best to keep up.  Aidan (1) was still too little to really play with them, but he had fun, nonetheless!

I love this one - they look so happy playing together!

Friday - this was a doozy of a night.  We were supposed to go to the Kaposia Days (So St Paul days) parade, but due to really horrible weather, it was cancelled.  It was also Scott's step-dad's 60th surprise party, so at least we still had fun.  Unfortunately, I didn't have the camera with me, which is a shame.  Ava had so much fun jumping in the puddles and making new friends at the party.  That girl was not afraid of the thunder at all...not even the really loud BOOMS that made the rest of us jump.  I think this is a good thing...

Saturday - playdate with Dylan and Lisa!  We headed out to River Falls, WI so we could enjoy some of the sticky, hot weather, and let the two toddlers have fun together.  Overall, they did really well -there were only a few tears, but honestly, being two and learning to share is a very hard thing, so I think it went great!  Dylan will have a new baby brother in just over a month - we can't wait to meet baby Jake!

The best part about going to someone else's house are the toys - Ava LOVED Dylan's lawnmower!  And who says you can't look sassy and stylish while doing outside chores??

"Hey, who's that cute boy at bat??"
I LOVE this picture - she just kept watching him as she was walking by!

Sunday - Mommy's been behind on reading friends' blogs, so Ava and I tried to catch up this morning.  We also headed down to Northfield to have a pool date at my friend Jane's house.  The weather was so wacky all weekend (tornado warning on Saturday night) that we weren't sure how today was going to go.  We ran into some rain on the drive down, and even had a downpour while we were IN the pool - but who cares, we were already wet!  Happily, the sun came out, and we were all able to enjoy the water.  Ava really liked swimming, so I think we'll need to be heading to the SSP splash pool a few times this summer.

And so here we the end of a weekend, looking forward to another fun week.  It will be interesting to see how Ava does with fireworks this upcoming weekend.  I'm hoping the exposure to the thunder on Friday night will help to take the edge off a bit.

It's time for this Mommy to go to bed - have a great night!

Helllloooo Terrible Twos!

Oh yes, we officially have a two-year old.  And she's having fun throwing tantrums, yelling, pushing, and generally asserting her little self. But, that's ok - that's how she's going to grow up to be an amazing person.  It's just a little stressful right now.  One funny non-birthday story: last week, as we were giving her a bath, she threw her arms up in the air and yelled, "I'm AWESOME!"  And then she laughed.  Apparently we tell her that all of the time...nothing like giving a toddler an ego!

We had a GREAT birthday weekend!  My parents came in from Colorado on Friday afternoon, so they were able to spend some time with Ava on her actual birthday.  They couldn't believe how much she had changed since they saw her last (Christmas.)  It's crazy how much 6 months can change a kid - especially when it's 25% of their life at that point.

We also had Ava's two-year pictures taken on Saturday morning.  In the past, we have had a TON of pics to choose from to order.  Not this time.  And not for lack of trying.  Ava wanted nothing to do with the camera.  She looked everywhere but at the photographer.  Just as I was thinking I had the worst pciture-taking kid in the world, in came the next clients...also with a two year old girl...who wouldn't let go of her mom if her life depended on it.  Seriously, the mom was on the floor trying to get her daughter off of her.  At that point, I felt a little better...until I noticed the most proper little girl (two years old, of course), waiting for her turn.  Very nicely dressed, beautiful curly hair - very, very proper.  Until her mom tried to put a bow in he hair, and then she started screaming.  Once again, my self worth as a parent crept up a bit...hey, it's not just my child who can be a pain in public!  And you know what?  We did get a few cute shots, so that's really all that matters.

Saturday evening Darren, Tiff, and Isabel came over for a bit and we had the chance to catch up and have the girls play together.  It sounds like Isabel called Ava her best friend on the drive to our house....awwwww!  So sweet!

Sunday was the BIG time!  Ava woke up crabby from her nap, and had absolutely no interest in opening her gifts, or even socializing much.  However, she thoroughly enjoyed eating the treats - especially chips and dip!  Sadly, we didn't learn from our Christmas gift opening adventure - we gave her a cool gift (toy microwave - yeah, it sounds dorky, but it's really sweet) in the middle of the gifts, and that's all she wanted to play with.  Sigh.  Eventually, I took over and opened the gifts for her.  I'm sure she'll grow out of that stage, right? :)

And then my parents left, and all was quiet once again.  We went to bed at 9:00pm on Sunday - we were absolutely beat down.  But, we're recovered, and ready to see what this child has in store for us this week.  Enough with the are some pics!

Getting ready for her two-year pics - she loves those sunglasses!

Posing with Gramma Karen and Papa Doug

She's not quite tall enough to pedal...but she can stand!

Isabel loved Ava's laptop...I'm sensing a good idea for her birthday gift in October!

Notice who's working hard (me), and who's goofing off (Scott)

Tiff and my mom

Me and Tiff

Me and MY mommy!

The guys: Darren, Dad, and Scott

Right after Scott sat on Ava's tricycle and we heard a loud POP!

Lookin sassy on her party day - notice the "I'm Awesome" shirt!

Loving the chips and dip

Reading with Grandma Deb

Time to open gifts!  Kind of.

And then I took over. I'm TWO again!

Yummy cake - of which Ava had no interest.

The microwave...

There you have it.  I can't believe she's two - I'm not sure where the time went.  It's been the best two years of my life, thanks to that little girl.  I love her so much!  Happy, Happy Birthday Ava Lorraine!!

Mommy's Pooped

I am beat.  In fact, I am currently soaking my feet in a tub full of warm water.  Scott left for Canada late on Wednesday night (like 11:30pm late...)  He went to the Great White North with the Winfield family (sans Tiffany and Isabel, however) for their annual fishing trip.

Now, I love my husband.  But every once in a while, I get really, REALLY excited to have the house to myself - well, Ava's here, as well as the three dogs, but still I am the ONLY adult.  And it's nice.  And things stay neat and tidy, just like I like them. BUT, on the flip side, I am the ONLY adult.  This means no "breaks" from watching Ava, or the dogs (and yes, they are work, too!)  It means stepping up and preparing all of the meals (Scott's the cook in our family - when I'm in charge, things get real simple...), doing all the housework, outdoor work, daycare dropoff/pickup, etc.  It's a lot of work.  Once again, these past few days makes me applaud all of the single parents out there. I cannot imagine how they do it.

Unfortunately, we've had a rough few days.  Lucky (our youngest beagle - and no, she's not a puppy, she's six years old) freaked out the other night, and tore up a bunch of carpeting in our basement.  And then she had the nerve to puke it up everywhere.  I have not been that angry in a very, very long time.  I've cooled down a bit, and let Lucky get back on my good side, but boy, she knew she was in trouble!

Ava's been getting a little tough at daycare - lots of hitting, pushing, "NO!"s, and even a big bite out of  Mommy's leg.  Granted, she will be two in less than a week, so I'm fully aware that we're entering the terrible twos...I just didn't realize how much patience it was going to take.  Needless to say, that's been a little draining lately.

And today, I decided to paint Ava's room...all by myself, with no one else availble to watch Ava.  What was I thinking?!  Overall, it went okay, but there were a few meltdowns (from both of us), a whole bunch of paint splatters, and a very sore right hand on me.  I forgot how much work it is to prepare (fill, sand, clean, tape) and then paint the room.  With multiple coats.  I do believe that second coat was the fastest I had ever done - at that point, I just didn't care anymore.  It turned out great's a really pale yellow, with just a hint of green.  Ava's room is currently decorated with yellows, greens, and pinks, so this complements the decor much better than the previous tan did.  Eventully, I will post pics. :)

So, here I sit, still soaking my feet, thinking about all of the things that we still need to do tomorrow. In the meantime, here are some cute shots from this past week.

Ava packed up one of my old purses with her cell phone, sunglasses, and a spare (toy) bottle.  As one point, she was laying back on the couch with the sunglasses on, pretending to text (uh oh)!

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not well-versed in styling hair.  So, imagine how happy I was when Ava came home from daycare with a little ponytail thing.  It was very cute and Ava seemed to like it, until Scott tried to take it out.  Bad idea.  He had no idea what he was doing - and it ended in tears.

And I realize these pics aren't of Ava - they're my flowers.  And they make me happy.

(Evil Lucky in the background...)

Have a great week!  Next time I post, Ava will be TWO!  Happy early birthday to my girl on June 18!
